This whopping big fish is a tribute to the legendary apex predatory species of the Murray–Darling River basin. It stands outside the railway station in the city of Swan Hill, which lies on the south bank of the Murray River in north-west Victoria. Fifteen metres long, three metres wide and five metres high, the steel and fibreglass Giant Murray Cod is at once a symbol of civic pride, an inducement for tourist snaps and a reminder that numbers of this species, once common in the Murray–Darling river system, have been greatly reduced. This Big Thing was originally built in 1991 as a movie prop for a film, Eight Ball, about an architect and ex-con who work together on a tourist attraction: a giant Murray Cod. After the film was made, the big fish was donated to the community of the Rural City of Swan Hill.
This postal numismatic cover and card houses an uncirculated coloured coin from the Aussie Big Things coin series depicting a graphic rendition of the Big Murray Cod. The coloured coin is a limited issue and has been produced by the Royal Australian Mint in aluminium-bronze. This embellished postal numismatic cover is limited to a numbered run of 2,800.
